Purpose/Vision/Mission
- Peer Washington's purpose is to provide peer emotional support and development services to:
- Washington state residents impacted by temporary or chronic addiction, mental health and/or HIV/AIDS, or other sexually transmitted diseases.
- Target disparately impacted communities through site expansion operated as a dba of Peer Washington named for location and guided by a charter identifying the target community served.
- Maintain safe space for members identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender non-conforming, or other sexual minorities at all our locations regardless of the target community.
- Services shall be open to any person impacted by addiction, mental health, or HIV/AIDS; however, outreach for each site will be directed toward the community identified in the site charter.

General Summary
Peer emotional support is the foundation of the services provided by Peer Washington. The ability to discuss struggles and successes related to experiences shared by another individual promotes healing and compliments traditionally accepted professional services in the healthcare system. The Peer Services Specialist's role is to work with individuals who are struggling with issues related to mental health, addiction, and/or chronic illness. The Peer Services Specialist will be an accountability partner to help members plan, evaluate, and maintain their recovery journey by engaging in a positive supportive relationship. The Peer Services Specialist is also responsible for demonstrating and inspiring hope, trust and a positive outlook and optimizing client connection with a broad range of community-based services and natural supports. The role of a program manager is to train and support the Peer Services Specialists in executing their service and supporting overall operations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Responsible for overseeing the Peer Kent Core Services Team.
- Recruit, train, supervise and mentor Peer Services Specialists (PSS). Identify annual goals and ensure direct reports can meet those goals.
- Build relationships with staff, members, and community stakeholders to provide services that best serve the needs of our members.
- Problem solve issues and conflicts as they arise that are beyond the scope of the PSS role.
- Actively address people and issues that conflict with Peer Washington policies or create an unsafe environment for people to come together. This includes mediation of personal conflicts among our members to full resolution and involving the Program Director when necessary.
- Maintain open communication and effective working relationships with fellow staff members based on mutual respect, reasonable and timely expectations that promote a positive working environment.
- Oversee/implement through your direct reports all training provided by Peer Washington specific to the services(s) assigned to you.
- Respond to all phone calls and emails within 1 working day.
- Work with your direct reports and other staff in the planning and coordination for all service specific events.
- Function as a representative on behalf of Peer Washington as needed with regards to community collaborations and events as assigned by the Program Director. This includes reporting back to the Program Director with updates and for direction on how to proceed with our involvement.
- Maintain clear communication with staff and volunteers. This includes keeping the Program Director updated on weekly schedules and copying all important communication.
- Strive to meet or exceed all grant/contract deliverables as assigned including reporting.
- Encourage members to get involved in volunteer positions, special events and fundraising events.
- Submit reports and deliverables in a timely manner.
- Respond as needed to referrals from community partners.
- Attend service specific meetings routinely.
- Provide support to any groups and group facilitators through supervised services.
- Provide support to all Peer Coaches through supervised services.
- Oversee the establishment and ongoing tracking of contract specific metrics.
- Develop Standard Operating Procedures for services overseen.
- Develop understanding of PSS roles supervised and provide ongoing learning support.
Required Qualifications
- Must identify as someone in recovery from substance use and/or mental health challenges and in remission for at least one year.
- Must be trained and certified as a peer recovery coach and peer group facilitator through Peer Washington, CCAR, or equivalent training model, or within the first six months of employment.
- Must have a Certified Peer Counselor (CPC) designation with WA state.
- Ability to travel and visit sites to provide support and supervision.
- Must have great organizational, documenting, communication, and program development skills.
- Ability to be an active listener by asking questions and reflecting on what is being said.
- Proficient level of ability with computer software: Microsoft Office Products.
- Ability to work both independently and under supervision.
- Ability to maintain and communicate healthy boundaries with peers.
- Ability to manage time effectively.
- Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of liability insurance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working as a Certified Peer Counselor (CPC) or Peer Recovery Coach.
- Established relationships with local community-based organizations.
- Trauma-Informed Peer Support and Mental Health First Aid training preferred.
- Knowledge of mandatory reporting standards
- Knowledge of peer drift and how to combat this.
- Knowledge of Medical Assisted Treatment, especially methadone
- Experience supervising peers
- Preference for lived experience with homelessness/housing insecurity.
- Ability to travel up to 75% including visits to Libraries and other community locations as applicable.
- Capacity to manage virtual platforms for peer coaching and support groups.
- Continue to offer routine group facilitator trainings and opportunities as supported by the site
Additional Compensation
- Starting wage $29.26 - $34.86 per hour DOE
- Paid Vacation Time – 120 hours per year, accrued at 4.615hrs per biweekly pay period, 120-hour maximum annual carryover.
- Paid Sick Time – 80 Hours per year, accrued at 3.077hrs per biweekly pay period, 480-hour maximum annual carryover.
- Three Personal Days if hired prior to October 8, 2025. Three Personal Days per quarter thereafter. Personal days do not carry over from year to year, have no monetary value, and are forfeited upon employment separation.
